Statement on false publications Involving Genoma USP

In recent days, posts have circulated on social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram) claiming that the Human Genome and Stem Cell Research Center (CEGH-CEL) at the University of São Paulo (USP) has developed a drug called FS271, allegedly capable of regenerating the spinal cord and curing paralysis.
The CEGH-CEL clarifies that this information is false.
Our institution has no research, project, or scientific publication related to any drug with that name or characteristics.
What We Actually Do
The CEGH-CEL is a Research, Innovation and Dissemination Center (RIDC) funded by FAPESP and based at USP’s Institute of Biosciences .
We conduct research in human genetics, molecular biology, and regenerative medicine , and we also provide genetic counseling and clinical services to patients with genetic disorders and their families.
Our work follows strict scientific and ethical standards, with all stages of research undergoing peer review, ethics committee oversight, and regulatory approval.
When relevant results are achieved, they are published in international scientific journals and communicated through the official channels of USP, funding agencies, and CEGH-CEL itself.
About the Circulating Misinformation
The publication in question, posted by a foreign social media page, incorrectly attributes to CEGH-CEL and to Professor Mayana Zatz the development of a supposed drug called “FS271,” claiming results in primates and upcoming human trials.
There is no scientific or institutional evidence to support these claims.
It is possible that the post confused our center with other Brazilian research on nerve tissue regeneration — a promising field, but one that remains in the pre-clinical experimental stage, with no approval for human use.
Even in such legitimate research areas, the path toward creating a safe and effective drug is long and depends on many stages of validation.
Commitment to Science and Transparency
The CEGH-CEL reaffirms its commitment to responsible science communication , to combating misinformation, and to valuing the rigorous research conducted in Brazil.
We urge the public and the press to always verify information with official sources before sharing content that promises “miracle cures” or “revolutionary” advances without scientific evidence.
